Legacy of Light

By:
Karen Zacarias

What is our legacy? Is it our work? Our children?
Two female scientists 300 years apart wrestle with love, light, motherhood, and what they will leave behind. Spanning centuries, this magical play from Karen Zacharias follows Emile Du Chatelet, a real 17th century scientist whose work was foundational for many of the 20th century’s greatest discoveries, but whose life was cut short before her work was done. She is juxtaposed with Olivia, a contemporary astrophysicist grappling with questions of what it means to be a mother, to a child and to a planet. With an appearance by Voltaire, discussions of Isaac Newton, sword fighting, an untimely lightning strike, and a surprise revelation, Legacy of Light asks and answers some of the cosmos’ most poignant questions.
