The soldiers have returned from war and stay with the gracious Leonato, governor of Messina. Among the company are Don Pedro, Benedict, and Claudio. Benedict, the jokester, is met by the sarcastic and strong-willed Beatrice and the two continue their usual insulting yet playful banter as both claim they will never marry. Young Claudio finds himself swept away by Hero, the daughter of Leonato. Don Pedro and the rest of the city prepare for the wedding of Claudio and Hero while also attempting to set Benedict and Beatrice up together. However, Don Pedro’s sly and villainous brother Don John sabotages the day, with disastrous consequences.
